Behaviour support Brisbane

NDIS behaviour support Brisbane

Positive Behaviour Support is an NDIS-funded service that works out what a behaviour is achieving for a person, then builds safer ways to meet that same need. In Brisbane, HandinHand delivers the functional behaviour assessment, the written behaviour support plan, and training for the people who use it, from our Fortitude Valley centre and by telehealth.

We support participants and families across Brisbane City and the inner suburbs, including Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Herston, and South Brisbane. The southside, Logan, and the Redlands each have their own page, so you can see which team covers your area.

How we work with Brisbane clients

Most people begin with a free 15-minute connection call. We check whether behaviour support is the right service, confirm the funding pathway, and give you a timeline you can plan around. From there you are matched with a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner who works in your part of Brisbane.

Who we support here

We work with children, teenagers, and adults. For children, that often means working alongside families, schools, and early learning centres. For teenagers, it means building independence and the skills that make school and home calmer. For adults, it often means working with Supported Independent Living providers and their staff to reduce and remove restrictive practices.

What behaviour support in Brisbane includes

A functional behaviour assessment

We start by understanding the behaviour before trying to change it. The assessment looks at when it happens, what comes before it, and what need it is meeting, using conversations with the people who know the person best, observation of daily routines, and records such as incident reports.

A plan the whole team can use

The behaviour support plan explains the behaviour in plain English and sets out proactive strategies, safe responses, and the skills the person is building. It is written with the participant, their family, and their support team.

Training for the people around the person

A plan only works when the people around the person can use it. We train families, carers, school staff, and support workers in the strategies, and we check in with them when something is not working.

Review and adjustment

Needs change, so plans change. We review progress against the goals in the plan and update the strategies when the person grows, moves house, or starts a new school or job.

How it works, step by step

Step 1. Connection call and intake

Fifteen free minutes on the phone to work out what you need and check what your plan covers. If behaviour support fits, we complete a service agreement and match you with a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner.

Step 2. Functional behaviour assessment

Your practitioner works out what the behaviour is achieving for the person, using interviews, structured observation, and the records that already exist. With your consent, this can include the school or the support team.

Step 3. Writing the plan

Where a regulated restrictive practice is in use, an interim behaviour support plan must be in place within one month of engaging us. The full plan follows within six months. The NDIS Commission sets both deadlines, not us.

Step 4. Implementation and review

We train the people who will use the plan, then track it against real data. Reviews are built in, so the strategies change when the person’s needs change.

Restrictive practices and NDIS obligations

What counts, and who is responsible

Chemical, physical, mechanical, and environmental restraint all count as regulated restrictive practices, and so does seclusion. Anything on that list has to be authorised, reported to the NDIS Commission, and reduced over time. Providers carry that obligation, not families.

How we manage the process for you

Authorisation in Queensland is external, handled through the Office of the Public Guardian or QCAT depending on which practice is involved. We do the evidence, the applications, the Commission reporting, and the reduction plan.

We treat a restrictive practice as a sign that an environment has failed the person. Every behaviour support plan we write includes a route to reducing and removing it.

Using your NDIS funding

Which part of your plan pays for it

Your behaviour support comes out of the Capacity Building part of your plan, under Improved Relationships. On a PACE plan you will see it listed as Behaviour Support, or sometimes CB Relationships. The wording changed but the funding did not.

Plan managed, self managed, and NDIA managed

Plan managed, self managed, and NDIA managed participants can all use us. Our registration for Specialist Positive Behaviour Support, group 0110, is what makes direct access possible for NDIA managed participants. Our NDIS Provider Number is 405 0111 401.

If behaviour support is not in your plan yet

An Assessment and Recommendation Report builds the evidence for including behaviour support at your next plan reassessment. We write those, and we will be straight with you about whether the evidence is likely to support the request.
