Psychology
Psychology at HandinHand is one-to-one mental health support delivered by AHPRA-registered psychologists. It is the work of understanding what you are carrying, then building practical, everyday ways to manage it.
NDIS-registered psychology delivered by AHPRA-registered psychologists. Available across Australia, in person and by telehealth, with Medicare and private options.
What Psychology Looks Like in Practice
Three ways people usually come to us, organised around what they actually need.
Psychology is not only for a crisis. It is the steady, structured support that helps you understand patterns, build skills, and feel more in control of day-to-day life.

One-to-one sessions for anxiety, depression, stress, grief, and adjustment. This is the right fit if you want a regular space to work things through. Delivered by registered psychologists, in person or by telehealth.

Assessment and Clarity
A structured psychology assessment to bring clarity to a diagnosis, support needs, or how things are tracking. This suits people who want a clear picture before deciding on next steps. Completed by qualified clinicians and reviewed before release.

Psychology Through Your NDIS Plan
Therapeutic support funded under Capacity Building in an NDIS plan, usually Improved Daily Living. This fits participants who want consistent sessions written into their plan. We work with Plan, NDIA, and self-managed plans.

Change rarely arrives all at once. Most of what therapy does happens quietly, in the space between one session and the next.
Therapy is not a quick fix, and we will not pretend it is. The first session will not undo years of feeling stuck. What it can do is start a process. Over a series of sessions, the patterns become clearer. The tools start to feel like yours. The change is slow, but it tends to hold.
You might be the person who has held it together for everyone else and has nothing left over for yourself. You might be the parent watching a teenager withdraw and not knowing how to reach them. You might be the NDIS participant who has tried supports before and wants something that actually fits this time. Different starting points, same first step.
Good therapy does not just help you feel better for an hour. It changes how you carry the hard things, so the next hard day is a little easier to meet.
That is the work our psychologists are here for. Whether it is regular individual sessions, a clear assessment, or therapeutic support written into an NDIS plan, the approach is the same. Evidence-informed, multidisciplinary, and delivered in person or by telehealth across Australia, by clinicians who will tell you honestly if something else would serve you better.
What does good psychology look like?
Psychology built around the person in the room, not a script.

A good session does more than tick a clinical box. It starts with listening properly, before anything is recommended. The work happens through conversation, through evidence-informed approaches like CBT, ACT, and EMDR, and through tools you can use between sessions. Some of it is structured. Some of it is simply having a steady person who understands what you are dealing with. Your psychologist explains the reasoning behind each step in plain English, without needing a clinical background to follow it.
Our psychologists work with clients in our centres, at home, and online across every state in Australia.
A psychology plan usually includes
- An initial session to understand your history and goals
- A shared plan you actually agree with
- Evidence-informed therapy matched to what you are facing
- Practical tools to use between sessions
- Regular check-ins on what is working
- Coordination with your GP or Support Coordinator, with consent
- An honest review if the fit is not right

What this means for you
Psychology services built to make a real difference, not just fill an hour.
The work should make a practical difference, for you and for the people supporting you. Here is what that looks like in how we work.
Plain English, not jargon
We explain what is going on and why each step matters, in language that makes sense. No clinical mystery. You leave each session understanding the work, not just sitting through it.
Support when you need it
We keep intake moving and do not leave you waiting in silence. Once you start, sessions are scheduled around your life, in person or online, so support fits rather than disrupts.
Qualified people
Your psychologist is AHPRA-registered and works alongside a wider allied health team. If your needs cross into occupational therapy, social work, or trauma therapy, the right colleague is already here.
Everyone stays in the loop
With your consent, we keep your GP, Support Coordinator, or family updated at the points that matter. You decide who is included. Nothing is shared without your say-so.
In person or by telehealth
You can see us at a centre or from your own home. Telehealth sessions are funded the same way as in-person care, so the choice is about what suits you, not your budget.
Backed by clinical oversight
Our clinicians work under senior clinical supervision and the NDIS Code of Conduct. That means consistent, ethical care, and a second set of experienced eyes on the more complex work.

What the process looks like
From your first call to your first session, here is what to expect.
- Book call
1
We talk through what is going on, work out whether this is the right fit, confirm the funding that applies, and give you an honest sense of timing. No commitment at this stage.
2
We match you to the right psychologist
Based on what you share in the call, we identify the psychologist whose approach and availability best fit your situation. We confirm your preferred location or telehealth option before anything is booked.
3
Your first session with a psychologist
You meet your psychologist in person or by telehealth. The first session is about understanding your history, your goals, and what matters to you. Together you agree on an approach before any deeper work begins.
- Underway
Start with a conversation
The clearest first step is usually a short call.
Fifteen minutes, no cost, no paperwork to fill in first. Tell us where you are stuck and we will tell you honestly whether therapy is the right move, which type of support fits, and what realistic timing looks like. If something else would serve you better, we will say so.

In their own words
How participants, families, and private clients describe working with our psychology team.
Shared with permission, in line with NDIS and AHPRA guidelines. These reflect people’s experience of working with us, not clinical outcomes or NDIA decisions.
NDIS participant
The first call did not feel like a sales pitch. They asked what I actually wanted from sessions, then matched me with someone who got it straight away.
Private client
I had put off finding the right person for years. The intake was simple and I never had to chase anyone. That on its own made it easier to start.
Parent of NDIS participant
They explained every step so I understood what my son was working on. I was included in the plan, not just handed it at the end.
Support Coordinator
I refer with confidence because I am kept in the loop the whole way through. Updates arrive when they say they will, which makes my job easier.
NDIS participant
What stood out was the consistency. Sessions ran the way they said they would, so I could plan the rest of my week around them.
Private client
Doing sessions from home took away the part that used to stop me. It felt just as personal on screen as it would have in a room.
GP referrer
When I send a patient their way, I know I will hear back. The communication between us is clear, which is rarer than it should be.

Trusted across Australia by NDIS participants, families, and private clients seeking psychology support.
Servicing QLD, NSW, VIC, WA, and via telehealth nationally.
Where we deliver psychology services across Australia.
We deliver sessions in person from our centres in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, Morayfield in Moreton Bay, North Strathfield in Sydney, Melbourne, and Mandurah in Western Australia. These centres serve the broader catchments, including Brisbane, Ipswich, Caboolture, Sydney metro, and Perth.
For clients outside the in-person footprint, we deliver sessions by telehealth across every state and territory in Australia. Telehealth is funded under the same NDIS, Medicare, and private pathways as in-person care, and the standard of care is the same.
How to fund psychology
Four ways to fund your sessions at HandinHand
Most clients access these sessions through one of four pathways. The connection call confirms which one fits your situation, and we check eligibility with you before any work starts. You will always know the cost before a session is booked.
Medicare Care Plan
Available via GP referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. The Better Access scheme covers up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year. A gap fee may apply depending on the session.
Private health insurance
Some extras policies offer rebates on these sessions. Cover varies by fund and policy, so check with yours. We provide receipts in the exact format your fund requires.
NDIS-Managed
Funded through your NDIS plan under Capacity Building, usually Improved Daily Living. We work with Plan-Managed, NDIA-Managed, and Self-Managed plans. Invoicing follows the NDIS Pricing Arrangements, so there are no surprises.
Most common pathway
Private pay
For clients not eligible for NDIS or Medicare, or who prefer to self-fund. The service agreement and session fees are confirmed in writing before any work starts.
NDIS plan management: Plan, NDIA, or Self-Managed?
NDIA-Managed means the agency pays us directly. Plan-Managed means a Plan Manager handles our invoices on your behalf. Self-Managed means you pay and claim back yourself. If you are not sure which applies, your plan documents will say, or we can check on the call. You do not need to be self-managed to access psychology with us. Only the payment route changes.

Is this right for you?
Psychology suits some situations and not others. Here is how to tell, before you spend time on a call.
If you are unsure, the connection call exists precisely to work this out with you, at no cost. We will help you work it out together.
We work with you if...
- You are dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, or burnout and want a regular space to work through it.
- You are a parent worried about a child or teenager and want guidance from someone who works with young people.
- You are an NDIS participant who wants therapeutic support written into your plan and delivered consistently.
- You are a Support Coordinator looking for a provider who keeps you informed and starts promptly.
- You want a psychology assessment to bring clarity to a diagnosis, support needs, or next steps.
- You have tried therapy before and want a better fit this time, not a repeat of the same experience.
- You are funded through NDIS, Medicare, private health insurance, or private pay, anywhere in Australia.
- You would prefer telehealth from home, or in-person sessions across QLD, NSW, VIC, or WA.
We may not be the right fit if...
- You need urgent or crisis care right now. In an emergency, please call 000, or Lifeline on 13 11 14, who can help immediately.
- You are looking for a prescriber. Psychologists do not prescribe medication, so a GP or psychiatrist is the better starting point there.
- You need a court-ordered or medico-legal report. That is specialist forensic work, and we can point you toward providers who focus on it.
- You want a guaranteed outcome or a set number of sessions. Therapy does not work that way, and we will not promise what we cannot control.
Not sure which column you are in? That is exactly what the free connection call is for.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The questions we hear most about our psychology services.
Still unsure after reading these? The connection call is short, free, and there is no commitment afterwards.
Psychology is the assessment and treatment of how we think, feel, and behave. A registered psychologist uses evidence-informed approaches to help with things like anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress. The aim is practical: to understand what is happening and build ways to manage it.
It is delivered by AHPRA-registered psychologists and covers assessment and structured therapy. Counselling focuses on talking through specific issues and is often shorter term. EMDR is a specialised trauma therapy. Many people use a combination, and the connection call helps work out which fits your situation best.
Our psychologists are registered with AHPRA through the Psychology Board of Australia, and some hold clinical psychologist endorsement. All work within the NDIS Code of Conduct and under senior clinical supervision. You can check any practitioner’s registration on the public AHPRA register.
No. You can come to us directly. A GP referral is only needed if you want Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Support Coordinators often refer, but it is not a requirement.
Yes. We deliver nationally via telehealth, including assessment and ongoing sessions. Telehealth is funded the same way as in-person care. Where in-person work is clinically preferable, sessions can be scheduled at our centres in QLD, NSW, VIC, or WA.
It depends on what you are working on. Some people come for a handful of sessions to get through a specific issue. Others stay longer for more complex or ongoing support. We talk through a realistic plan at intake and review it with you as you go.
NDIS sessions are billed under the NDIS Pricing Arrangements. Medicare sessions attract a rebate under Better Access, with a possible gap fee. Private sessions are charged at our standard rate. Whichever pathway applies, you receive a clear quote and service agreement before any work begins.
Yes. Our team is multidisciplinary and AHPRA-registered through the Psychology Board of Australia, with several clinicians holding clinical endorsement and EMDRAA accreditation for trauma work. Complex cases are reviewed by senior clinicians before and during delivery, and everyone operates under the NDIS Code of Conduct and our own clinical governance framework.
The Better Access scheme covers up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan. After that, sessions can continue at the private or NDIS rate. Your GP reviews the plan, so it is worth asking them what you are eligible for.
We are honest about this. The work is evidence-informed, but no one can guarantee a particular outcome, and we will never pretend otherwise. If something is not working, we say so and adjust the approach, change the focus, or help you find a better-suited provider. The point is to keep the work useful, not to keep you in sessions.
Yes. With your consent, we update your GP or Support Coordinator at the points that matter and share relevant documentation on request. You decide who is included and how much is shared.
